Affirmations.
What are they? Why is everyone talking about them? Do they really work? Good questions. It’s pretty simple. You tell yourself good things about yourself repetitively and intentionally until you believe them. Both psychology and faith agree on the benefits of using this strategy.
Proverbs 18:21 NIV says that “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” Our words can have serious positive or negative consequences. Psychologists note that positive affirmations can help people cultivate an optimistic outlook on life and build resiliency (read more here).
For a long time, I was resistant to the idea of affirmation. I thought I was lying to myself because I didn’t believe the good things I was saying. In reality, if you feel like this it’s even more important for you to say positive affirmations several times a day. An affirmation is NOT pretending or lying to yourself- it’s reminding yourself that you’re a lot more capable and worthy than you typically give yourself credit for. Affirmations allow you to be mindful and intentional about dwelling on positive things. And that’s very important.
